3C Xing Yi Quan
Xia Lin’s ongoing project 3C Xing Yi Quan is an open-source internal martial art that mimics the behavioural patterns of technological products. By observing how our devices move, rest, signal, and respond, the practice cultivates a form of kinesthetic empathy with the machines that cohabit our lives. Rather than resisting technological encroachment, 3C Xing Yi Quan invites us to lean into it – exploring what it means to share space and rhythm with our devices. Through imitation, repetition, and somatic attunement, practitioners enter a state of cohabitation where the human becomes both host and parasite, caught in a feedback loop of influence and adaptation within our synthetic proximities.
About the artist
Xia Lin works across multimedia, video, text, and performance to explore the intersections of Tai Chi philosophy, martial arts, and the cognitive processes of both humans and machines. Their ongoing project 3C Xing Yi Quan is a new form of internal martial arts that seeks to embody the essence of mobile devices and digital accessories, offering a practice for cultivating mind–body equilibrium in the digital age. Xia is a co-founder of lololol, whose initiative Future Tao explores contemporary interpretations of Taoist thought in relation to technology and everyday life. Their works, performances, and collaborative projects have been presented at Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival (UK), Taipei Arts Festival (TW), Times Museum (CN), Vernacular Institute (MX), Flaneur Festival (DE), Liquid Architecture (AU), and Contemporary at Blue Star (USA), among others.
