At the entrance to the outdoor pool stands a telescope. Whoever looks through it sees neither slide nor birds, but a glittering world made of shell fragments and found objects. With his sculpture My Little Starlink, François Briand wants to offer the audience small escapes from everyday life. Instead of magnifying the world around it, his telescope simply invents a new one.
About the artist
François Briand (he/him), born in 1992, lives and works in Strasbourg (FR). The glassblower combines traditional craft techniques with digital processes such as 3D modeling in his often luminous artworks. Fascinated by the symbolic as well as physical properties of glass, Briand investigates how the material shapes perception, communication, and technology. His works have been presented, among other places, at De Kunstfabriek (Rotterdam, NL). In September, his works will be on view as part of Venice Glass Week at Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa (Venice, IT).
François Briand refers to Zoë Claire Miller’s artwork The Pearl Is the Oyster’s Autobiography (2017). Miller invited bathers to explore slimy Aquapearls with their hands and thus shift attention away from the environment and toward their own perception. François offers them an alternative perspective.
