A cascade of glittery pool floats appears to drip from the lifeguard tower: Maya Man has printed each ring with the name of a makeup product sold by the cosmetics chain Sephora under the search term “waterproof”. With this gesture, the artist highlights the absurdity of brands using product names like Stay All Day®, Aqua Resist® and Lights, Camera, Splashes™ to pressure consumers into wearing artificial beauty armor, even in the swimming pool.

With this fortress of glittery swim rings, Man brings her digital practice into the physical world – translating her critique of capitalism from the internet into the lived reality of the swimming pool. In addition to Glitter Tubes (Waterproof), there is also the parasitic online work Waterproof GRWM for the pool, which infiltrates the TROPEZ website like a digital bug. The web-based piece infinitely generates a "Get Ready With Me" script – a popular format for YouTube or TikTok Videos – composed entirely of the names of "waterproof" makeup products, unexpectedly interrupting the user’s scrolling…
About the artist
Maya Man (she|her), born 1996 in Philadelphia (US), lives and works in New York (US). In her artistic practice, she explores contemporary identity culture in the digital space. She examines dominant narratives of femininity, authenticity and digital self-presentation. Her websites, generative series and installations have been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (US), SOOT in Tokyo (JP) and on the online platform Feral File, among others.
