The idea of exhibiting in a toilet has occupied Josip Novosel for a long time. Whatever city he lived in, he was always drawn to public restrooms and their various functions and uses. For toilets can be passageways, places of intimacy and anonymity, but in the context of queerness and club culture they can also represent nostalgic places of retreat or places of gatherings and hedonism. In Patience III, Novosel wants to challenge viewers to rediscover their spontaneity and also openness to the new, to give them the choice of leaving things behind or looking at them from a different perspective.
As an artist, Josip Novosel often tries to exhibit in spaces that allow his art to be read differently. His diploma work at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna was also in a transit space, as well as numerous other works have taken place in or at ephemeral locations. In Portugal, Novosel exhibited on a fence (2018), on a staircase in London (2016), and in a gym in Moscow (2016).
