Instead of excorcising the ghosts of the present, Shasti will invite them in for the second edition of Unguarded's trilogy at Tropez' pool.
For the memories of Indonesians, the one hour between sunset and the end of red twilight is supernatural. Ghosts will come out with intensified presence and sometimes that demands a mindful relationship with your surroundings. Shasti wants to re-enchant these disenchanted time and space, which exorcise, hunt, dismiss and silence what is not visible, or made invisible.
In anticipation of the sunset, Shasti will perform a ghost story with sounds and writings of theirs about the erasure of ghost memories. A collection of thoughts written from a state of floating. This will be Shasti's first time performing and composing a longer sonic piece by themselves, built with lulling, possessing, and ritualistic gamelan sounds, combined with voice. Shasti will take us into their sonic ritual to summon these memories in the diaspora. To haunt the landscape with their familiar imageries, which often seem to not belong in the picture.
Shasti (they/dia) builds their oeuvre from reimagining the supernatural and investigating the politics behind its demonisation. Shasti equips themselves with physical and digital distortions of voice to embody the diabolical, re-narrate obscured histories of rage and revenge, and speculate on ghosts, haunting and curse. Much of these processes materialise in text-based and audiovisual performances that also reflect on diasporic bodies, grounded in the understanding of space, body and spirits in the local mysticism spread all around the now Indonesia, where they were born and grew up. One of their current works, Devil’s Whisper, explores the decolonial, queer-feminist and supernatural vision of tech, and has been performed as part of dgtl fmnsm’s performances Virtual Healing Hub and interFACE - digital pleasure center.
Unguarded, founded in 2020 by Philipp Hülsenbeck, Tim Roth, and later joined by Dounia Biedermann, gathers a collection of genre-defying works by longtime collaborators as well as artists they bonded with in recent years. Their releases constantly escape from definition but through entangling their unique artistic marks, this diversity remains absorbing and compelling throughout their sprawling sonic miasmas. Combining earth-shattering club cuts, equally elegant and bouncy, Unguarded contributes to and connects the experimental music scene in and outside of Berlin. We invite the curious to a deep, tense but rewarding experience.
