With her artwork WATER / SKY, Amelia Winger-Bearskin lays the sky at the visitors' feet. On the way to the meadow, they walk over mirrored puddles. The organic shapes are inspired by bodies of water in Florida, the home of the artist. But Winger-Bearskin also reflects the careless use of water to the pool audience. We are still able to ignore issues such as water scarcity and polluted drinking water in Germany; indigenous communities that are already struggling to preserve their ecosystems are too far away, and the findings of water scientists about an impending water crisis are too abstract. However, the three-part artwork encourages swimming pool guests to see their behaviour from a new perspective. For SWARM, the artist translates her digital practice into physical space, as an analogue glitch in the carefree everyday life of the outdoor pool. At the same time, she uses the TROPEZ website as a reservoir for the individual's thoughts on water: photos or short texts on the various (sky) moods can be uploaded there. There is also a letterbox in the outdoor pool itself. The artist wants to get the conversation flowing about oceans, rain and other bodies of water.
About the Artist
Amelia Winger-Bearskin (she|her), born in 1979 in Greece (New York, USA), is Native American (Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma) and lives and works in Gainesville (Florida, USA). Her artistic interest lies in scientific storytelling about ecological futures and climate justice, with a research focus on water. Using digital tools, she develops prototypes for a just future in places that do not yet exist. She is a professor of Artificial Intelligence and Art at the Digital Worlds Institute at the University of Florida. She founded the AI Climate Justice Lab, the Talk To Me About Water Collective, and the Stupid Hackathon. Her work has recently been exhibited at the NXT Museum (Amsterdam, NL), the digital gallery Feral File, and the Whitney Museum of American Art (NY, USA).
