At the public swimming pool, people appear seemingly unconcealed – yet they are often, more or less graciously, assessing each other’s bodies, covered only by swimwear. Valuables and clothing are set aside, and the elements of one’s identity – and perhaps even small secrets – are stored in lockers. The installation your fears will gather dust is situated right next to the pool’s valuables lockers and seems to belong to a metaphysical, imagined being. These lockers are inhabited by spiders and overlaid with embroidered and sculptural fabrics. In this piece, Habki exposes the potentially shame-laden secrets of his fictional creature, illustrating how the notion of intimacy is inverted at the swimming pool – a space where personal belongings become intrusive, and the body disappears into a crowd of exposed skin.
About the artist
Amine Habki (he|him), born in 2000 in Nantes (FR), lives and works in Paris (FR). In his installations, he reworks traditional objects and symbols of virility through embroidery and painterly techniques. He interweaves fragments of intimate narratives with ancient myths, which he reclaims through delicate materials and vivid color palettes. His embroidery and drawings have been exhibited at the Centre Pompidou-Metz (Metz, FR), The Koppel Project (London, UK), and Artagon Pantin (Pantin, FR), among others. In 2023, he participated in the 67th Salon de Montrouge (FR).
