Flower Planet Freestyle
Ikebana is an art of flower arranging, dating back over half a millennium. Cultivated in Japan, the origins of Ikebana stem from Buddhist and Hindu traditions, in which flowers served as offerings to metaphysical beings. The ephemeral material form of Ikebana was intended to represent a transcendent beauty. After centuries of rule-based and schematic arrangements, "freestyle" Ikebana was invented in the early 20th century. It blends the traditional with free, individual attempts.
The three-hour introductory workshop with Christian Kōun Alborz Oldham offers a practical approach. A discussion of rare publications on Ikebana art and a historical overview present the basis on which participants can create their first freestyle arrangements. Local plants and weeds from the swimming pool area and the surrounding park will also be used.
About the artist
Christian Kōun Alborz Oldham is an artist, writer, and Ikebana practitioner. He continues to run Flower Planet, a studio founded by his teacher Kosen Ohtsubo, a key figure in the avant-garde Ikebana movement since the 1970s. The studio offers lectures and workshops, its own publications, and organizes exhibitions on various aspects of Ikebana from ancient times to the present.
