Waxed cotton fabric, polyester-cotton thread, Velcro, plastic filling material, sand
238 cm x 272 cm
At the edge of the lawn lie two green fabric wings, as if forgotten in the outdoor pool by a giant fairy. Anyone who wishes can lie down inside them and be photographed there. With her textile sculpture Wax Cotton Wings, DaddyBears draws on the visual language of Fairycore, which is widespread on social media. It celebrates forests, meadows, and fantasy creatures as an escape from a reality shaped by pressure to perform and normative gender images.
About the artist
DaddyBears (she/her), born in 1994, lives and works in London (GB). For her textile sculptures, the trained fashion designer deliberately uses repetitive handwork and techniques labeled as “women’s work.” The resulting playful-looking artworks move between escapism and (dark) humor. Most recently, DaddyBears exhibited, among other places, at Saatchi Gallery (London, GB), Semester9 (Amsterdam, NL), and Galleria Giampaolo Abbondio (Milan, IT).
DaddyBears refers to Maya Man’s installation Glitter Tubes (Waterproof) (2025), which addresses the production and circulation of digital self-images. While Man focuses on the commercial staging of beauty, DaddyBears shifts attention to the role of fantasy and self-staging in social media.
