Erinnern und Werden (Remembering and Becoming) is a three-part reading series for young audiences, curated by artist and author Moshtari Hilal. Three authors born in the 1990s read from their books and come together in intimate, accessible conversations about their writing—exploring growing up, what it means to be human, and the search for the self.
To open the series, Duygu Ağal reads from his novel Yeni Yeşerenler. This coming-of-age story follows Derin and her Anne—a mother who is both a role model and great love, yet also an obstacle on the path toward a self-determined life. Through sensitive prose and shifting narrative perspectives, Ağal explores what it means to become the person one wants to be. The novel addresses lesbian love, the move from Hamburg to Berlin, and the process of breaking free from familial expectations, offering a nuanced portrait of growing up.
Following the reading, Duygu Ağal will be in conversation with moderator Zeynep Dilek about the novel and his writing.
The reading and discussion will take place in German.
Duygu Ağal is an author and moderator. Raised in Hamburg, he lives and works in Berlin, where he is studying American Studies at Humboldt University of Berlin. His debut novel, Yeni Yeşerenler, was published by Berlin-based Korbinian Verlag.
Until recently, Zeynep Dilek worked in the corporate sector in the field of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion before taking time out to explore her creativity and embark on a freelance career. She came to moderating through community and cultural events, where she has hosted conversations with creatives, artists, and musicians about their work and experiences. Her interests center on questions of belonging, memory, faith, and how we become the people we are today.
