The inviting images in the kiosk windows break with the surface-level idyll of the public pool: T Vinoja’s textile art appears delicate at first glance, with its fine craftsmanship and seemingly friendly motifs. Yet Homecoming tells of the horrors of the civil war in Sri Lanka, which raged in the country for three decades until 2009. The artist, whose own life has been marked by displacement, poverty, and violence since childhood, often uses old clothing in her work today. On the run, such garments were used to build shelters, bandage wounds, and cover the dead. Homecoming is a reminder of how many people currently neither live in safety nor have food – and that French fries and a day at the pool are, in fact, luxuries.
