Galvanized metal, rubber
120 x 270 cm
On the sunbathing lawn, a chain of metal figures greets the audience. They look as if they had been cut from a giant folded strip of paper. Depending on the angle of view, the oversized paper cut-out consists either of four and a half silhouettes or of the four and a half hearts between the bodies. With the sculpture A Poem by repetition by Eugen Gomringer III after Natalie Czech, Virginie Sistek adds a final line to the poem Inversion und Öffnung: zwei Sprachspiele (1988) by the concrete poet Eugen Gomringer and translates it into space:
The heart in the human
The human in the heart
About the artist
Virginie Sistek, born in 1999, lives and works in Lausanne (CH). In her installations, videos, and texts, she examines social habits, frictions, and the absurd contradictions of everyday life through humor and irritation. To do so, she adopts existing forms and texts and translates them into new narratives that are often at once surreal and familiar. Her artworks were recently shown, among other places, at Istituto Svizzero (Rome, IT), Abbatiale Bellelay (Saicourt, CH), and Tunnel Tunnel (Lausanne, CH). In 2024, she received the Helvetia Art Prize.
Virginie Sistek likes to surround herself with the works of other artists. Here she refers to Natalie Czech’s photo work A poem by repetition by Eugen Gomringer 2 (2019). While in Czech’s work text is the central artistic medium, Sistek is fascinated by the motif of repetition — how repetition creates community and shapes social roles.
