Alejandro Almanza Pereda
Melon, carrot, lettuce, kohlrabi, pear. (After J.S.C), 2016
HD video projection, 18 ́33”
The video Melon, carrot, lettuce, kohlrabi, pear. (After J.S.C) by Alejandro Almanza Pereda is a version of the still-life Quince, Cabbage, Melon, and Cucumber by Juan Sánchez Cotán set in motion.
The painting depicts groceries in the »cantarero«, an early form of fridge in which food was stored – sometimes hanging on strings. Also in the video, a cantanero is the frame in which the objects are fighting with their balance. They move nearly unnotably, only to suddenly dissapear from the picture. Mesmerized by the music after a motive of Spanish composer Antonio de Cabezón (1510–1566), the viewers slowly realise that the objects in the video are set under water. These unexpected kinds of arrangements are typical for Alejandro Almanza Pereda’s works. In his sculptures and installations, he often arranges objects from everyday life or industrial materials into configurations challenging the rules of gravitation.
