(dis)Unity in (in)Difference

This year’s summer program follows the theme of (dis)Unity in (in)Difference, bringing together critical voices focussing on the paradoxes and political absurdities of national borders, and the way they are negotiated through the body, embodiment and movement. Welcome to Europe: a place where surveillance is privileged above freedom and solidarity among its own citizens. 

The migrant, the refugee, the other – represented by the one that crosses the sea – becomes the embodiment of personal, as well as political fear. What worst case scenarios are still avoidable and what futures are still imaginable, or desirable in this context? What will be lost forever if we don’t start making changes by building new forms of thought and comprehension? Examining these themes will be Berlin-based Brazilian performance artist, and musician Sanni Est, curator and researcher Petra Poelzl and cultural anthropologist and social scientist Nadiye Ünsal. The panel will be moderated by sociologist and Democracy in Europe Movement (DIEM25) activist Aleksandra Lakić.

Est uses her body as a political weapon and visual element to incite conversations around structural violence and discrimination. Poelzl investigates the contemporary political and social upheavals emerging since the beginning of the 21st century, where its early promise of free, self-determined movement in a globalized, digitized and 'borderless' world is one available only to a privileged few. Ünsal reflects on the intersectional power structures of the border regimes of Europe and Turkey, and gives an interdisciplinary account of the geopolitical hegemonies that are (de/re)stabilized through the introduction of the legal category of refugee. 

The discussion will be accompanied by a music program with London's producer A.G, the duo BAZOGA, sound collagist Dovecake and DJ Larry.

Europool creates space for political organisation and direct action. The cutting edge program of thinking, listening, and dancing sets the tone for reflection on community empowerment, urging viewers to take part in the conversation around Europe as it exists today.

Creamcake is a regular music series in Berlin initiated by Daniela Seitz and Anja Weigl. Since 2017 they have organized 3hd Festival, combining interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of avant-garde, pop, performance, and visual arts, circling around crucial changes in the digital society. Cooperating with numerous institutions in Berlin including Akademie der Künste, Berghain, Hebbel am Ufer, OHM, and Südblock, Creamcake has positioned the project as an open and queer series, presenting visionary, nonconformist, and experimental sounds, from the outset.
