As part of Tropez’ summer exhibition and programme BELIEVE, Broken Dimanche Press is delighted to return to the swimming pool with a third installment of Empathy When, a conversation and podcast series. John Holten is joined in this season with Anna Akosua.
The second talk of the season is with photographer Jürgen Beck and focuses on his new artist's book Sun Breakers. The book, published by Spector Books, establishes a dialogue between the photographs and the architectural space of House E. 1027, which was designed by the Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray (1878-1976) and has recently become an architectural icon. The E. 1027 house is like an oasis, conceived and built according to idealised ideas. Beck directs our attention to a design that takes into account people's psychological and emotional needs. His photographs of the house approach the building as if in search of something. The Sommerbad Humboldthain is an ideal place to explore this project and embark on a mental journey to this place of longing.
This event will be moderated by John Holten and Anna Akosua.
Jürgen Beck lives and works in Zurich, Switzerland. He graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. Whether artist book, photographic print, poster, or display, the medium of photography is always part of an experimental practice in Beck's work. He was the artist in residence at the studio program at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris, at Coast Time (USA) and a fellow at the institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA). His works and publications were shown at Ditch Projects, ZHdK Zurich, Galerie b2 Leipzig, the Swiss Art Awards, Camera Austria’s Book Lover‘s Shelf, the Kunsthalle Lucerne and New Toni, Berlin.
Anna Akosua (Anna Hankings-Evans) is a German-Ghanaian corporate attorney and lecturer in EU law and international economic law. Her research focuses on public international law, particularly from a postcolonial TWAIL perspective and with a special focus on the African region. In this context, she wrote her doctoral thesis on bilateral investment treaties between China and African states, subjecting them to analysis in light of global power shifts. Since 2018, she serves as an independent legal expert for the African Union.
Broken Dimanche Press is a European press interested in all aspects of books within the wider discourses of contemporary art and literature.
