Erinnern und Werden (Remembering and Becoming) is a three-part reading series for young audiences, curated by artist and author Moshtari Hilal. Three authors born in the 1990s read from their books and come together in intimate, accessible conversations about their writing—exploring growing up, what it means to be human, and the search for the self.
To open the series, poet Lara Rüter reads from her book Affenliebe (Monkey Love). Reflecting on the five years she spent working at a primate research institute, where she assisted with behavioural studies of great apes, Rüter asks what it means to be an ape and to what extent ideas of being and becoming human are shaped through our distinction from other animals. Weaving together observations of the animals with memories of her own beginnings in life and reflections on death, freedom, and touch, she develops a poetic and self-critical meditation on what it means to be human.
Following the reading, Lara Rüter will be in conversation with artist and author Moshtari Hilal, author of Hässlichkeit (Ugliness), about the book and her writing.
The reading and discussion will take place in German.

About the guest
The writer Lara Rüter (*1990) was the winner of the poetry prize at the 26th Open Mike. In 2020, she received the Caroline Schlegel Encouragement Prize for Essays, and in 2021 the Wolfgang Weihrauch Encouragement Prize at the Literary March. For her poetry collection amoretten in netzen (2024, Wunderhorn), she was awarded the Kranichstein Literary Encouragement Prize in 2025 and the Orphil Debut Prize in 2026. Her book Affenliebe was published by Hanser in 2026.
