NANA with Sara Lu, Rayne J Raney, Soroa Lear and music by VCO and Julius Gabriel
dance and sound performance
In the late summer heat, dancers, a saxophonist and an electronic composer will gather and take flight in the garden of TROPEZ, exploring their collective symbiosis and instinctual way of organizing and congregating in community. How can humans from today's (perhaps overly) technologically advanced society still learn from the animalistic ways of tending to their surroundings? What are the repercussions if they continue to ignore their interconnectedness with each other and nature? This performance is open to all, and will conclude with a movement exercise for kids!
About the Artists
NANA (she|they), also Annalise Van Even, is a Berlin-based multidisciplinary performer and choreographer, allowing dance and the architecture of the body to be a vessel of storytelling. Her movement creation comes from the play of improvisation scores, and discovering various emotions, states, and modes of physicality that can be transmitted through the body. NANA’s choreographic work is deeply inspired by nature, science fiction, surrealistic architecture, mysticism, and spiritual archetypes from collected archives of Ancient China, Mesoamerica, Paganism, and India (to name a few sources of research). She is interested in the radical work of challenging borders both geographically and interpersonally. Nana has worked with Vogue Magazine, Paul Taylor Dance Company and ARTE, among others.
Sara Lu (she|they) is a Berlin-based performance artist and movement facilitator. Trained in ballet, contemporary dance, and Butoh, they are continuously in search of authentic expression, building bridges between inner experience and the realm of physical matter. They see embodiment as a form of channeling that completes (and returns to) the spiritual alignment. Growing up in a family of activists shaped them into an artist who advocates against inequalities and discrimination in both: the art-making process and performance encounter. Sara Lu has worked with RambaZamba Theatre, frontviews and Tanzfabrik, among others.
Rayne J. Raney is a performing artist, poet and choreographer as well as founder and artistic Director of the Berlin based performance collective RAYNE&CEREMONY. In 2017, Rayne graduated from the Boston Conservatory for Performing Arts with a BFA in Contemporary Dance, specializing in Creative Performance and Choreography. Since then, he has collaborated with renowned choreographers like Rose Anne Spradlin, Lilith Glimcher, and Rosie Herrera, both in the United States and abroad, while also expanding his creative horizons in Berlin through collaboration with Caner Teker. Rayne is dedicated to creating inclusive environments for performers and audiences. He advocates for accessibility and equity in the arts, challenging barriers related to race, gender, and sexual orientation.
Soroa Lear (she|her) is a queer Cuban-Lebanese-American dancer, performer and writer based in Berlin. She completed her studies in contemporary dance and comparative literature at Reed College (Portland, USA), which sparked her interest in the intersections between critical theory and movement. Her practice is heavily influenced by physical theater, drag, Gaga, and Berlin's nightclub culture – something she was able to practice and study thanks to a research grant she received in 2019. Above all, Soroa sees performance as a way to break hearts and make people laugh, playing with the body to connect to the ridiculous, the subtle, the ugly and the heartbreaking. She has performed and worked with Cora Frost, Leo Asemota and Sebastian Abarbanell amongst others, and has performed in spaces such as Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Sophiensaele, and KINDL- Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst.
Julius Gabriel (he|him) is a saxophonist whose work explores the boundaries and intricacies of his instrument. He delves into the dynamic interplay between corporeality, acoustics, transcendence, and hypnosis. Deeply rooted in improvisation, his music draws inspiration from a diverse spectrum of genres. Regarded as a virtuoso in an existentialist sense, he is now on his fifth solo album.
Guillermo Rojas (he|him), also known as VCO, is a DJ and artist from Gran Canaria (ES). Unsettling ambience and hammering percussion breakup the rhythms that define his sound. He is a resident DJ at Tresor Club and a member of the Same Bitches collective. Rojas began his journey in 2015 at Tresor's New Faces series, solidifying his reputation with captivating performances. Driven by a passion for sonic exploration, he delves into various electronic music genres, including electro, acid, drum and bass, Hiphop, and 90s UK bass. Rojas also explores ambient sound design, exploring and expanding his skills in uncharted sonic territories. Moving forward, he remains dedicated to delivering innovative performances while staying true to his artistic vision.
