Elif Saydam’s work reminds viewers that their perception of reality, i.e. the respective interpretation of their sensory impressions, is determined by their horizon of knowledge and experience. In her sculptures and installations, Saydam quotes familiar text and image motifs, so that the audience is likely to discover familiar narratives. Her contribution to REALITY takes this to the extreme: Saydam has developed a memory game for the website. Déjà Vu (2020) is inspired by social distancing and early online games. In the process of playing, the playing cards suggest a narrative of their own. The viewers are thus made aware of their need to put what they have seen into a meaningful context, even if there is no »objective« reason to do so. In addition to playing cards with small paintings and with motifs recurring in Saydam's artistic practice, the memory also contains pairs with contributions by six-year-old Matthea Wallenhorst.
Elif Saydam (*1985 in Calgary) works in Berlin. She integrates writing, performance and sculpture into an extended painting practice. This year she is showing her work in solo exhibitions at Rüdiger Schöttle in Munich and Mélange in Cologne as well as at the Arp Museum.
