At the pool
NIEVES, 2021
Acrylic paint on vinyl canvas
155 x 100cm
In front of the kiosk hangs the completely analog painting Nieves (2021) by Manuel García Díaz. It shows the identical lettering, framed by colorful, traditional Mexican ice. In Mexico, the word snow (Nieves) is used colloquially for ice. The artist takes up a local tradition for his painting: There ice cream street vendors traditionally advertise their products with hand-painted labels (rótulos) - in contrast to industrially produced impulse ice and its advertising at the swimming pool kiosk.
About the artist
Manuel García Díaz (b. 1988, Guadalajara, MEX) is primarily concerned with gender and power issues inherent in sports. He is interested in the influence of sports practice on the constitution of contemporary identities, the place of the body in culture, the role of heroic and idealized figures, and the weight of these narratives on popular imaginaries. García Díaz's work has been shown at Salón ACME in Mexico and Poppositions 2015 in Brussels, among others.
