Swarm intelligence is not something we have only been concerned with since the growing importance of digital media: we have encountered it since the beginning of time, for example as language, archives or in the world of animals. The summer exhibition entitled SWARM reveals where community and algorithms determine our everyday lives. The artists Khaled Barakeh, Mahube Diseko, Rashiyah Elanga, Levi van Gelder, Joey Holder, Shamiran Istifan, Lucía Pizzani, Niclas Riepshoff, Julijonas Urbonas and Amelia Winger-Bearskin intervene in swimming pool processes, invent SCI-FI scenarios and utilise artificial intelligence. They propose alternative forms of collective memory, translate internet phenomena IRL and explore ways in which groups can renew themselves.
On the green area, at the edge of the pool or in front of the kiosk building, visitors to the pool will encounter outdoor sculptures and (sound) installations, including sky puddles and forgotten civilisations, megabrain changing rooms and surveillance systems, memes and marginalised communities. By interacting with the artworks, the individual can visualise what their decision-making power means: Why do I – as part of the community – choose a dangerous alternative? Which algorithms should I question because they lead to anachronistic judgements? What can I change in favour of the community? It becomes clear how important access to knowledge is – for everyone – so that everyone can make informed decisions.
SWARM aims to strengthen a multi-voiced, self-determined swarm in which individual action leads to collective responsibility for one another.
