Exhibition with Haseeb Ahmed, Amine Habki, Melike Kara, Tilhenn Klapper, Maya Man, Rosanna Marie Pondorf, SUNDAYS, and T Vinoja
TROPEZ brings art to the public pool – and with PARASITE, it celebrates non-conformity. Between order and expectation, the exhibition opens up space for new ideas. The sculptures and installations actively intervene in the daily life of the pool and disrupt routines. Inspired by Michel Serres’ positive theory of the parasite, PARASITE proclaims: creative interference is worthwhile! TROPEZ itself can also be seen as a kind of parasite: an art space nestled in the middle of a public pool, with (sun-)bathers as its audience.
The artists Haseeb Ahmed, Amine Habki, Melike Kara, Tilhenn Klapper, Maya Man, Rosanna Marie Pondorf, SUNDAYS, and T Vinoja intentionally shift poolside habits through their installations and sculptures, opening up unexpected contexts. Right at the entrance, mysterious, transparent lockers draw attention. A bulging mass of swim floats spills over the lifeguard tower, and just behind it, a wind sculpture forms a space mid-air. This summer, the kiosk windows are draped in delicate fabric. And even the new bench is far too intriguing to simply sit on. In front of the pool, a solitary server rack rises from the lawn, while chiming bats hide in a plane tree. And on the spacious sun terrace, an entire mini-golf course has emerged.
PARASITE encourages pool guests to examine existing structures with open eyes and to boldly engage with what’s happening around them. In short: bringing order to chaos – and the unexpected into what’s all too regular. The artworks invite playful interaction or spark conversations about authority over meaning, belonging, the constructed nature of narratives, and the power of one’s own critical voice.
